Phl to host world volley tilt

-

After a successful hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup, another world-class event will be coming to Manila as the country hosts the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship next year.

No less than FIVB president Ary Graca made the announcement, saying that the Filipinos have a golden chance to make history as they host the prestigious event that will feature 32 of the best men’s volleyball teams in the world.

The event is set from 12 to 28 September 2025 while the draw is scheduled on 12 September this year.

“Today, you will write history again. For the first time ever, the Philippines will host the prestigious FIVB Men’s World Championship in 2025,” Graca said during the awarding of the hosting rights to the Philippines on Wednesday in Lausanne, Switzerland.

“In an open bidding process, you have overcome many strong bidders to win this race. And I am sure that you will extend your warm hospitality to all 32 participating men’s teams and the many thousands of international fans who will come to your country in 2025.”

First hosted by then Czechoslovakia in 1949, the tourney was originally a quadrennial competition. It was held in Asia only twice in 1998 and 2006 with Japan as host while two countries co-hosted it in 2018 (Italy and Bulgaria) and 2022 (Poland and Slovenia).

Graca thanked the federation — the Philippine National Volleyball Federation — for its effort to spearhead the staging of the event that is expected to draw around 500 athletes, coaches and officials, and thousands of fans from all over the world.

“All of this would not be possible without the hard work of the National Federation and the strong support of the government,” the FIVB chief said.
