Man kills self after hacking 2 nieces dead

- By MARS W. MOSQUEDA JR.

CARCAR CITY, Cebu – In what is considered as another gruesome result of someone’s consumption of illegal drugs, an alleged drug addict hacked his two nieces to death using a bolo before killing himself by slashing his throat.

The incident, which occurred in Sitio Kalangyawon, Barangay Napo, this city, shocked the small community even as sources said the parents of the girls should have taken precautions against the suspect, knowing that he was a well-known illegal drugs user.

The victims, Rosalyn Mangyao, 16, and her sister Chairmain, 11, were found dead with hack wounds on their heads. The suspect, their uncle, Domingo, 29, was also found dead apparently after he committed suicide.

The police said the two girls were left in Domingo’s care while their parents went to a neighbor’s house to pray for a relative who recently passed away.

The girls’ uncle, Domingo, even cooked dinner for the family before the parents of the victims left.

Domingo was staying with the family after his release from jail last September. He had been in jail for holding a girl hostage.

The police said Charmain suffered a wound in the neck while Rosalyn had a wound in the chest and neck.

Meanwhile, in Badian, Cebu, a 21-year-old woman drowned after posing for a souvenir photo at the picturesque Kawasan falls in Barangay Matutinao, this town.

Police investigators said Geraldine Indig, a store cashier from Cebu City, was happily posing for snapshots being taken by her friend and co-worker Abegail De Guzman

Indig, during the photo session, kept on moving from one place to another in the water until she unknowingly reached deeper waters.

Senior Police Officer 2 Jeremias Elardo of the Badian Police Station said apparently, Indig suddenly tipped over, then went underwater as she was swept by a strong current away from her photo taking friend. De Guzman waited for a few minutes but Indig no longer resurfaced.

As it turns out, Indig did not know how to swim. De Guzman immediately asked assistance from other people in the area.

People who responded to De Guzman’s cries for help caught sight of Indig and got her out of the water. She was unconscious when she was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.
