DU30 calls for death penalty; to ‘walk the extra mile for peace’

- By FRED LOBO

PRESIDENT Duterte has renewed his call for the restoration of the death penalty to put more teeth in his campaign against illegal drugs and heinous crimes.

Congress’ support and approval needed-- to really win the war vs drug lords and hardened criminals, said DU30.

*** Likewise, Malacanang and House leaders have thumbed down proposals for a Senate inquiry into alleged “extra-judicial killings” related to the implementation of the anti-drug campaign.

Congressional inquiry will only derail the campaign, and besides, police abuses can be checked by the the PNP, Napolcom, or the President himself, they argued.

*** Duterte made the pitch for death penalty in a casual meeting with several lawmakers and in other meetings with government officials and military officers.

Let’s agree on this ASAP, the President asked.

*** “The President mentioned he thought we should bring back the death penalty especially for drug traffickers,” Angara recalled.

“So we will listen to several proposals for the return of the death penalty,” he added.

*** Duterte declared earlier that he prefers to hang dangerous and hardened criminals instead of killing them via lethal injection, to suppress crimes within his first six months in office.

Let’s stop major crimes and “bitay” is the cheaper wayto do it, he suggested.

*** Duterte noted that initially, the anti-illegal drugs campaign is proving to be a “success” with many drug lords and pushers getting arrested or shot dead, and hundreds of drug users surrendering for rehabilitation.

This is a good development and we welcome this Duterte Effect, many concerned citizens agreed.

*** Likewise, Speaker Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez thumbed down the proposals of Sen., Leila de Lima and Sen. Ping Lacson for a Senate probe on the alleged cases of “extra-judicial killings” in relation to the illegal drugs campaign.

Let’s focus on priority measures that will benefit the country, he suggested.

*** Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri and other lawmakers added that President Duterte should first be given the latitude to purge society of illegal drug syndicates.

Give DU30 a chance to fulfill his promise, they said.

*** Meanwhile, the President welcomed the “belated yet strategic” decision of communist rebels to reciprocate the unilateral truce he declared in his SONA.

Willing” to walk the extra mile for peace” in forging a truce with the CPP-NPA-NDF bloc, DU30 said through Presidential peace adviser Jess Dureza.

*** “Indeed ,this is a welcome development ”. It affirms the value of the President’s firm actions for peace,” Dureza added.

Time to give peace a chance.Time to end bloody and destructive war.
