She won for her performance in the indie film “Area” directed by Louie Ignacio. Ai Ai played an aging sex worker in search of her son. “Natulala ako sabay iyak, sabay luhod at umiyak sa pasasalamat at nanginginig pa katawan ko (buti wala ako sa NYC kasi baka mahimatay ako ’di ko din makuha ang award. Comedy talaga),” her Instagram post read in part on that moment she learned about her victory. “Area” previously earned the Special Jury Prize in the 12th Eurasia International Film Festival. At Queens World Film Festival, Ai Ai beat Amy Redford of “Hate Crime,” Dorothea Hagena of “Mann Im Spagat – Pace, Cowboy, Pace,” Karin Hanczewsk of “Lotte.” About 54 nations, including Spain, Korea, Bangladesh, China, Italy, Ukraine, Iran, Belgium, Finland and the UK submitted entries, according to the festival’s website.
Ai Ai, a Papal Awardee, currently stars in “Sunday PinaSaya” and “Hay, Bahay!”
Angel Locsin will no longer fly as the female superhero Darna, period.
The news was announced by ABSCBN’s Head of Corporate Communications Kane Choa.
“ABS-CBN, Star Cinema, and Angel Locsin have mutually arrived at a final decision that she will no longer pursue the ‘Darna’ movie due to her medical condition,” the press statement read.
Recall Angel underwent operation and rehabilitation due to the bulging disc in her spine. This limited her from doing strenuous activities needed for action stunts. She first had her medical procedure in December 2015 then another in February 2016.
“We gave Angel our full support during and after her treatment in hopes that she would portray the iconic Filipino heroine. Because of Angel’s passion and dedication, she resumed training for the movie after undergoing surgery and therapy for the disc bulge in her spine. Unfortunately, Angel experienced back pain twice during training, prompting her doctor to advise her not to participate in strenuous activities to avoid permanent damage on her spine,” Kane said in the press release.
While it was first revealed in 2015 that Angel will no longer do the movie remake of “Darna,” many of her fans were still hoping she would still don the red cape. Other actresses, including Liza Soebrano and Nadine Lustre, were also previously speculated to play the role.
“We would have loved to see Angel fly again as Darna and take our hats off to her for the gargantuan efforts she has put in for the project.”
Angel first portrayed the role of “Darna” in GMA’s fantaserye in 2005. She isn’t doing “Darna” anymore but her fans would still see her in other projects. It has been awhile since Angel has been visible onscreen. Her last projects were “Pilipinas Got Talent” and the movie “The Third Party.”
“We wish her well as she will begin working on other projects, like a special role in ‘La Luna Sangre’ with John Lloyd Cruz, a movie with James Reid, a movie with Coco Martin, and a teleserye,” he said.
In a previous interview with Angel in July 2016, she said she would always consider herself as Darna whether she gets the project or not.
“Basta ako naniniwala pa rin ako na ako si Darna. Sa akin man ang role or hindi, ako pa rin si Darna,” she said. “Because nakikita ko ang sarili ko sa kanya
and nakaka-relate ako sa kanya. Sa tingin ko, kaya rin siya bumenta sa lahat ng mga Pilipino kasi lahat tayo nakakakita sa kanila, mayroon tayong kanya-kanyang pagiging superhero.”
