Eastern Visayas households increase by 13.9%

TACLOBAN CITY — The number of households in Eastern Visayas increased by 13.9 percent from 865,657 households in 2010 to 985,913 households in 2015, the Philippine Statistics Authority Regional Statistica­l Services Office 8 based here said.

The report said that Leyte recorded the most number of households among the provinces — excluding Tacloban — with 405,873. The province of Samar ranked second with 165,286, followed by Northern Samar with 126,562, Eastern Samar with 106,324, and Southern Leyte with 92,803. Biliran recorded the least number of households with 38,518, the report added.

Among cities — excluding Tacloban City — Ormoc City, Leyte had the highest number of households with 50,341. It was followed by Calbayog City, Samar with 38,411, and the City of Baybay, Leyte with 26,180. The City of Borongan, Eastern Samar recorded the least number of households with 15,120, the report said.

Tacloban City, a highly urbanized city in the region, registered 50,547 households in 2015, from 45,478 households in 2010, the report added.

The report also said that the average household size (AHS) in the region in 2015 was recorded at 4.5 persons, lower than the AHS of 4.7 persons in 2010, showing that typical household in Eastern Visayas has an average of less than five members, the report added.

In terms of the highest AHS in the region, Northern Samar ranked first with an average of 5.0 persons. The province of Samar ranked second with 4.7 persons, followed by Southern Leyte with 4.5 persons, and Eastern Samar and Biliran with 4.4 persons. Leyte (excluding Tacloban City) posted the lowest average household size of 4.2 persons.

On the other hand, among the cities (excluding Tacloban City), the City of Catbalogan, Samar had the highest average household size of 4.9 persons, closely followed by Calbayog City, Samar with 4.8 persons. The City of Baybay, Leyte recorded the lowest AHS of 4.1 persons.

Tacloban City, meanwhile, posted an AHS of 4.8 persons, the report said.
