BUTUAN CITY – A school principal died after being electrocuted during a Brigada Eskwela activity over the weekend in an Agusan del Sur town. The weeklong Brigada Eskwela started last Monday, May 15.

Police, identified the victim as Josie De la Cruz, 60, a principal of Ormaca Elementary School in San Francisco town, Agusan del Sur.

Initial investigation conducted by the San Francisco Municipal Police Station showed that Dela Cruz was picking up some trash while cleaning the grounds of the school, Saturday, when she unknowingly touched a live wire.

Co-teachers, parents and other Brigada Eskwela volunteers came to her rescue, but their efforts were in vain as Dela Cruz was declared dead on-arrival at a nearby hospital.

School officials and teachers in the Department of Education (DepEd) in Caraga region mourned the death of Dela Cruz.

San Francisco MPS is still investigating the incident, and has asked the Agusan del Sur Electric Cooperative to help check all lines and electrical installations in public schools, especially now that school opening is less than two weeks away.
