Independence Day of Jordan

-

JORDAN Independence Day is observed annually on May 25 in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, commemorating the date in 1946 when the country achieved independence from the British Mandate. Academic institutions usually organize round-table discussions, special seminars, symposiums on themes associated with the observance. These are attended by political leaders, military officials, and academicians who discuss how the holiday can help give greater meaning to the lives of ordinary Jordanians.

Churches arrange special religious services. Freedom of religion is broadly appreciated in Jordan and His Majesty, King Abdullah II, is constantly greeted in a special holiday mass service held by the Greek Orthodox Church. In the evening, the sky of Amman is illuminated with fireworks.

Jordan is an Arab Kingdom that “sits strategically at the crossroads of the continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe.” It is bordered by Saudi Arabia on the east and south; Iraq on the northeast; Syria on the north; Israel, Palestine, and the Dead Sea on the West; and the Red Sea on its extreme southwest. Amman is the country’s capital and most populous city. It is Jordan’s economic, political and cultural center.

Jordan has many natural landscapes and urban attractions. Travel advisors describe a trip to Jordan as a journey that brings the visitor back to Biblical times with sites like the Dead Sea and the ancient city of Petra.

National Security Adviser Hermogenes C. Esperon Jr. recently met with His Majesty, King Abdullah II, of Jordan to discuss Philippines-Jordan bilateral relations as well as potential areas of cooperation in military and security matters. Secretary Esperon led the Philippine delegation to the Agaba Process Meeting on Southeast Asia held in Jordan’s port city of Aqaba. The Philippines has an embassy in Amman, while Jordan has a consulate general office in Manila.

We greet the people and government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan led by Their Majesties, King Abdullah II, Queen Rania and HRH Crown Prince Hussein, and Prime Minister Hani Al-Mulki, on the occasion of its Independence Day.
