Common folk contribute to Leni’s fight before SC

- By RAYMUND F. ANTONIO

She is not alone in her legal battle.

Aware of her financial incapability, Vice President Leni Robredo found support in a group of women who came to her aid by paying R30,000 of the R7.5-million balance for her counter protest against former Senator Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.

They trooped to the Supreme Court (SC), sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), to pay the amount as their contribution to help Robredo who, up to this day, is raising money for her cash deposit.

Nina Yuson led a group of private individuals in asking the SC to consider their payment as part of their efforts to protect their votes against Marcos who wants to overturn the results of last year’s elections.

The PET ordered the Vice President to pay an election fee of R15.5 million for the recount of votes in the protest filed by Marcos.

“Hinihiling namin sa Korte Suprema na payagan ang mga karaniwang Pilipino tulad namin na patuloy protektahan namin ang aming mga boto (We are asking the Supreme Court to allow us common Filipinos to protect our vote),” she said.

Yuson said they were aware of the situation of the Vice President, who has less than three weeks to raise the money before the July 14 deadline set by the PET.

On May 2, she paid R8 million, which came from her money while the rest were loans from relatives of her late husband, Jesse Robredo — Vicente Hao Chin, Pablito Chua and Rafael Bundoc.
