Uber is back on the road after paying 1190-M fine, partners

- By CHITO A. CHAVEZ

Transport Network Company (TNC) Uber on Tuesday issued a check for

1190 million as payment for a hefty fine imposed by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to lift its one month suspension for violating transport regulations.

It’s partners rolled out on the streets at 5 p.m. yesterday after showing proof that it paid its drivers 1299.24 million during the days they were not allowed to ply the streets.

The fine which Uber paid will go straight to the national treasury.

The LTFRB then asked Uber drivers for receipts of the financial

aid they received and compared it with four "samples" to see if it matched in their system.

In the presence of Uber representatives, LTFRB officials found that all the receipts matched.

The transport regulatory board suspended the operations of Uber last August 14 for a month for accrediting new drivers despite an LTFRB order directing it to stop further accreditations. Uber offered to pay a 110 million fine in lieu of suspension.

However, due to public demand, LTFRB imposed a 1190-million fine on Uber to lift the suspension and asked the TNC to pay an additional 119.9-million daily assistance to its transport network vehicle service (TNVS) partners who were affected by the suspension.

LTFRB Board Member and spokesperson Aileen Lizada said the 1190-million fine is fair based on the remaining 19 days of the suspension order multiplied by Uber's average daily income of 110 million.
