Chot turns down SMB import’s offer to play

- By WAYLON GALVEZ CHARLES RHODES

Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes yesterday turned down the offer made by former PBA import Charles Rhodes on social media to represent the country in future international tournaments.

Rhodes, who helped the San Miguel Beermen win the PBA Commissioner’s Cup title in July, had tweeted Reyes of his interest to play Gilas, saying: “@ coachot Hello Coach, I want to play for you and the Philippines. Please consider, as I want to represent this country on and off the court.”

While pleased with the gesture, Reyes politely declined the offer, saying the team is more focused on acquiring younger prospects. Rhodes is 32 years old.

“Appreciate the offer of @officialcrhodes to play for Gilas.,” Reyes said. “We really like his game… But our mandate in the search for naturalization candidates is to go for youth — in the 23 - 28 yo range. Just like @drayblatche in 2014.”

Reyes was referring to Andray Blatche, who played for Gilas since the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain and last saw action in the SEABA Champion- ship last May.

Though disappointed, the 6-foot-8 Rhodes kept his high hopes that Reyes would reconsider.

“Thanks @coachot I just want to Display my passion and work ethic for this country. And hopefully I can make you very proud with my play,” said Rhodes.

“But I understand you are looking for youth. And I hope you all find that. But this is the COLOSSUS, Age ain't nothing but a Number.”

“#WeArePBA I'm cheering for #Gilas regardless if I'm on the Team or Not! It's #TeamPhilippines,” added Rhodes.

Gilas is set to make its return later this month when it represents the country in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup in Chenzou, China. The Philippines earned a wild card spot in the Sept. 22 to 30 tourney after a Japanese club backed out because of conflict in schedule.
