Filipino whiz kids win 273 medals in Singapore math contest

Young Filipino wizards won 273 medals at the Internatio­nal Mathematic­s Open for Young Achievers (IMOYA) held in Singapore.

The Filipinos students brought home 32 gold, 75 silver, and 166 bronze medals to place third based on the medal tally, said Dr. Archieval Rodriguez, president of the Mathematic­s Developmen­t Academy of the Philippine­s (MathDAP).

Rodriguez said 2,203 students from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Macau, Malaysia, Philippine­s, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand joined the contest.

China won 55 gold, 120 silver, and 300 bronze medals to place first; followed by Taiwan with 34 gold, 70 silver, and 170 bronze medals, and the Philippine­s.
