Teachers, volunteers to get poll duty allowance increase

- By SAMUEL P. MEDENILLA

To entice more volunteers to serve during the elections, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has raised the honoraria for members of Electoral Boards (EB).

In its Resolution No. 10194, Comelec opted to raise the honoraria for the Chairperson of the EB to R6,000 from R4,000.

Likewise, it also implemented a R1,000 honoraria hike for members of the EB and the Department of Education Supervisor Officials (DESOs).

The new honoraria rate for EB members is now at R5,000, while the new rate for DESOs is R4,000.

Meanwhile, the honoraria rate for the support staff of DESOs was also raised to R2,000 from R1,500.

Aside from the honararia, Comelec also increased the travel allowance for its chairpersons, members of the Electoral Board, DESOs and their respective support staff members from R500 to R1,000.

The poll body also raised the death benefit for election volunteers from R200,000 to R500,000.

It also allocated a maximum of R200,000.00 for each person who rendered election-related service and suffered election-related injury or illness.

"The honoraria and allowances mentioned... shall be paid within fifteen days from the date of election," Comelec said.

The new rates will be subject to the review of the Comelec and the Department of Education (DepEd) every three years.
