‘Maring’ floods Calabarzon; hundreds evacuate

Typhoon “Maring” battered Southern Tagalog and parts of Central Luzon yesterday, causing severe flooding in many low-lying areas that forced the evacuation of hundreds of families and the suspension of work and classes.

Batangas In Batangas, more than 190 families were forced to evacuate their homes because of continuous heavy rains that have started since Monday, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said.

It said the evacuees came from Barangays Sta. Rita, 21, Sta. Clara, Calicanto, and Pallocan West in Batangas City; Barangays Manghinao Proper, Aplaya, San Roque, and Sto. Domingo in Bauan; Barangay Quiling in Talisay.

More families were also reported to have evacuated their flooded homes in the towns of Taal, San Luis and Nasugbu.

The PDRRMO also noted that roads in Barangay Solo and San Jose in Mabini town were impassable due to landslides while the spillway in Barangay Quilo and Catandala in Ibaan were also closed to traffic.

Minor landslides were also reported in Barangays San Guillermo and Sta. Maria in this city.

Laguna

In Laguna, the PDRRMO said Barangays Landayan, De la Paz, and Pulo in Biñas as well as Barangays Parian and Looc in Los Baños were flooded. The national road was also under water and closed to traffic particular­ly in the vicinity of the Sta. Cruz Bridge.

Likewise, portions of the roads in Barangay Ibaba del Norte near the Public market in Paete; and Mabitac Road in San Antonio; and the Sta. Maria Road were impassable to light vehicles.

About 130 families or 82 individual­s from low-lying areas had to be evacuated to designated evacuation centers in various towns, the PDRRMO said.

Quezon

In Quezon province, the Police Provincial Office (PPO) recorded a landslide in Barangay San Andres, Atimonan at 3 a.m.

Flooding was also reported to the PDRRMO in Barangay Binutas, Calauag; Barangays San Isidro, Kulawit, Sukol, Habingan, Tagbakin, Magsaysay, Lumutan, Poblacion 1, 2, 3, Victoria, Camagong and Bacong, San Lorenzo and San Rafael in Mauban town.

Overflowin­g of water on the spillways in Barangay Sapaan, San Andres Labak, Balubad, Kilait and Lubi was also reported in Atimonan town.

Meanwhile, three fishermen in the towns of Buenavista and Mauban were reportedly missing in high seas.

PDRRMO also reported that 60 families were evacuated from the town of Agdangan, 15 families, Padre Burgos, 11 families, Quezon, Quezon, 23 families, Plaridel one family, Calauag, 10 families, Dalahican in Lucena City about 40 persons and Atimonan with 755 persons.

Fourteen were reportedly injured, one was electrocut­ed, 13 others including Abas.

Cavite In Cavite, overnight rains spawned by Maring caused floods in low-lying areas in Noveleta, Kawit and Rosario municipali­ties, the Cavite Office of Public Safety (COPS) reported.

Governor Jesus Crispin C. Remulla suspended yesterday classes in all level and works at the Capitol and other local government offices due to heavy rains.

COPS Officer Trixia Flores said that floods were reported in Barangay San Jose I in Noveleta and some areas in neighborin­g Kawit and Rosario and that one person was reported missing and shanties damaged in Barangay Biluso in upland Silang municipali­ty as the downpour heightened.

Flores said that no casualty was reported as evacuation was conducted in the affected areas.

In Noveleta, Mayor Dino Carlos Reyes Chua confirmed the flashflood­s after a coastal breakwater was damaged and the overflowin­g of IlangIlang River due to the off-and-on rains before dawn.

Deep floods were reported onManila-Cavite Road and some other secondary streets in Noveleta.
