Siemens offers ‘digitalization solutions’ to power, infra facilities

- By MYRNA M. VELASCO

German conglomerate Siemens AG is bringing to the Philippines its ‘suite of digitalization solutions’ that could help infrastructure and manufacturing facilities improve reliability and efficiency on their operations while also saving on costs.

According to Siemens Philippines President Joseph Jorel Nuyda, the digitalization solution being dangled to their customers would be via the company’s “MindSphere,” a cloudbased operating system that allows any entity “to understand and maximize the wealth of data found in every machine and system of a business.”

The accumulation of data, which is widely integrated in any business or enterprise, would just need to be processed and interpreted so they can be part of solutions in stepping up efficiencies in their operations – and this is where ‘digitalization solutions’ would be aiding businesses on.

In the country, Nuyda noted that main target clients are energy facilities as well as those in health care and other public utilities and infrastructure facilities like roads, rail systems, and airports.

“In the Philippines, we are already working with our customers to make digital transformation a reality,” he said.

Nuyda added “with our industry know-how and digital portfolio, we can digitally adapt and enhance legacy systems and identify where digital technologies can best enhance performance, productivity and competitiveness.”

For instance, in the energy sector, he emphasized that with digitalization the power facilities could reduce their downtime or facility shutdown duration by 20 to 30-percent, and such essentially results in cost savings and better services to consumers.

“In energy, the company’s services and solutions allow its customers to optimize the performance of energy generation technologies and to make digital grids more flexible and resilient, allowing power to stay on where severe weather and other conditions increase the risk of power outages,” Siemens said. For the oil and gas industry, advanced software is also being used to improve training, safety and return on assets.

Digitalization is basically anchored on internet of things (IoT), wherein billions of intelligent devices generate massive volumes of data, “and turning these into value,” hence, becoming a critical factor to success in operations of businesses or enterprises.

According to Dr. Armin Bruck, regional chief executive officer of Siemens, the company is “going full speed ahead in shaping the digital transformation,” including in the Southeast Asian region.

He noted that they are currently pursuing “open collaboration” and have been groundbreaking innovations on this sphere – and such shall include opening of channels to partner with the Philippine academic sector so they can keep pace with enhancing ‘skill set’ of the young on the evolving thrust of digitalization that will reign in the corporate world for the years to come.

“We are here to help businesses in the Philippines realize the value and maximize the benefits of digitalization,” Bruck said.

He added the company “is offering rich and comprehensive digital portfolio by combining Siemens software, the cloud-based, open IoT operating system MindSphere and digital devices across all domains.”

In infrastructure, it was further emphasized that “Siemens software and advanced data analytics would enable its customers to improve the operation of critical facilities,” including buildings, traffic management systems, rail signaling and automation systems and high-speed rail.
