Math wizards recognized by Zambo gov’t
ZAMBOANGA CITY — The city government held a special ceremony recognizing the achievements of 25 students of Zamboanga City Chong Hua High School (ZCHHS) who reaped medals in various international mathematics competitions held in the past months.
City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco awarded the “Certifico de Reconocimiento” (certificate of recognition) to each of the students including ZCHHS Principal Dr. Simon Chua.
Climaco led the recognition ceremonies during Monday’s flag-raising.
Leading the math wizards was Sean Anderson Ty, a Grade 11 student, who reaped a bronze medal in the 58th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), regarded as the most prestigious and most difficult math contest in the world which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from June 12-23, 2017.
Ty becomes the first student to have garnered the IMO medal since the Philippines participated in the contest in 1988.
“We are very proud of your achievements,” Mayor Climaco told the students as she congratulated not only the students but the parents, guardians and coaching staff for providing the needed support and guidance to the students that eventually resulted in their victorious representation. “You did not only bring honor to the city but to the entire country,” she told the students.
