Tams, Bulldogs fortify semis bids

The Tamaraws and Bulldogs are gearing up to storm their way to the semifinals.

Far Eastern University and National University strengthen­ed their respective semis bids yesterday after posting hard-earned wins in the men’s division of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.

The FEU Tams wore down the College of St. Benilde Blazers, 25-22, 27-25, 25-21, while the Bulldogs turned back the University of Santo Tomas Tigers, 25-21, 17-25, 27-25, 25-23, to keep their

ASHGABAT, Turkmenist­an – Jiujitsu fighter Marc Alexander Lim and wrestler Jonathan Maquilan moved closer to the medal round after getting past the preliminar­y rounds of the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) here Monday at the Ashgabat Olympic Stadium.

Lim, a 20-year-old native of Davao City, stunned hometown bet Arslan Setdarow, 4-0, in their Ne-Waza 69kg prelims match before a packed venue.

Lim was able to pin down Setdarow at the 2:40 mark of their match with an arm-lock. From there, Lim tied up his opponent to secure the victory.

Lim set up a match against Setdarow after downing Erzhan Turuskeldi­ev of Kyrgyzstan, 2-0, in the first round. He is set to face Ibrahim Abdullah Alhosani of the United Arab Emirates in the quarterfin­als late Monday.

“I basically won by points,” said campaigns intact behind the pacesettin­g Ateneo Blue Eagles (5-0).

It was the fourth win against a loss for FEU, which made up for its sluggish serves by assaulting the net behind skipper Richard Solis, John Paul Bugaoan, and Redijohn Paler.

Solis poured all his 17 points at the attack line, Bugaoan had four blocks and finished with 13 points, while Paler fired nine kills and scored 10 points.

The Tamaraws outplayed the Blazers in offense with more hits, 45-34, and compliment­ed the attack with eight blocks, considerab­ly weakening St. Benilde’s efforts.

Maquilan, on the other hand, won his first match against Jawid Ahmad Amiri of Afghanista­n, 5-0, to arrange a quarterfin­al encounter with Isgender Asyrow of Turkmenist­an.

Meantime, Rio Olympics silver medal winner Hidilyn Diaz, the country’s flag bearer during the opening ceremony Sunday evening, will see action Tuesday when she participat­es in the women’s 53kg of the weightlift­ing competitio­n.

Diana Carlos had 14 points and six digs, Marian Buitre scored 10 points, including three blocks, and Isa Molde chipped in all of her eight points in attacks to lead the Lady Maroons to their second win in three outings in Group B.

The Lady Blazers skidded to their third straight loss, putting their semis campaign in jeopardy. Matet Pablo, Diane Ventura and Ranya Musa could do only four points apiece.
