Medical cure for cancer

- By FR. EMETERIO BARCELON, SJ <emeterio_barcelon@yahoo. com.>

THERE have been recent developments in the effort to cure cancer. It seems to be a logical development. Basically it is similar to the Salk vaccine. The researchers have wondered why before any spontaneous cure in cancer cases, there has been observed a fever that happens. This fever seems to energize the body’s white blood corpuscles to attack the cancer cells. The body’s immune system suddenly realizes that the cancer cells are enemy cells. The cancer cells had been able to fool the immune system that they were not enemy cells. Once the immune system recognizes cancer cells as enemy it destroys these cells. One way to revitalize the immune system is to create a vaccine out of the patient’s own blood and re-inject it into the body just as Jonas Salk did against polio and Pasteur did in vaccinating us against small pox. This is the hope of cancer patients. The Federal regulatory body in the US has just approved for “last resort” one of these types of vaccine.

Leprosy has been a dreaded disease since before Biblical times. There were some cures by prophets of the Old Testament. Our Lord Jesus cured lepers for he had pity on them as they were outcasts of society. There was no medicinal cure and because of their sores they reeked of stench. St. Damian of Molokai was made a saint because of his love for the lepers who had no one to care for them. St. Francis of Assisi cured a leper by overcoming his own repugnance and kissing the leper. But in our times leprosy has been conquered. Not much is heard of this accomplishment for which some of our researchers in Culion and San Lazaro have contributed considerably. Leprosy is now curable so we no longer have to isolate lepers in Culion or Tala, or Molokai.

Another recent breakthrough for which the Gates Foundation is credited is the separation of the part of cannabis that produces the high and the part that is useful for removing pain. Although our legislature has recently approved medicinal marijuana, this separation will make it easier to administer marijuana for medicinal purposes.

Other life-style diseases are diabetes, Altimeters, Parkinson’s, and obesity. Diabetes is a special problem for this country. We take a lot of sugar so that sugar is now considered a problem source. One way to prevent diabetes is to take a cup or two of coffee a day but without sugar. A friend had his toes amputated recently and another friend had both her legs cut off. And yet these could have been prevented, A particularly good sugar is cocosugar but even this is problematic. Honey is probably your best sweetener and the sweet taste of the plant is probably the best alternatives. Alzheimer’s is growing as more people survive to old age. Here coconut oil is supposed to be able to help especially (VCO) or virgin coconut oil. There are also cures from medicinal plants for Alzheimer’s and the Internet touts a cure for Alzheimer’s. With Parkinson’s there are a number of successful drugs. It is a pity to see a friend’s vitality sucked up by Parkinson’s. We do not have the problem of obesity as in the US but it is growing here. An old remedy for this is taking a table spoon of apple-cider vinegar in a glass of water. This should help since obesity is not just a question of diet and exercise but also how to stimulate the hormones in our body to dissolve the persistent accumulation of fat in our bellies.

We live in an age of medical breakthroughs so that we may hope to live to one hundred or more. There is no reason why we cannot.
