Does he still know how to govern?
THE more than 16 million voters who elected Rodrigo Duterte in May, 2016, want to know if the person they had chosen President is acting like one.
This disturbing question is being asked by them becausea little more than a year in office, 80 percent of his activities cannot be considered presidential in nature.
Their consensus is that DU30 is acting more like a prosecutor (again!) and a city mayor (“na naman!”) than the country’s Chief Executive. And why are they saying this? These days he preoccupies himself (and leading the complainants) most of the time in planning to file cases in court and impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives against those whom he sees are committing violations against the Constitution (impeachable offenses).
Why does he do this work himself? He has a trusted and able political ally in the person of House Speaker Bebot Alvarez who fits to a “T” in this kind of work!
First to be targeted was Comelec chief Andy Bautista. He was saved from the impeachment proceedings via the bungling of prosecution lawyers and complainants whose documents the House Justice Committee found to be insufficient in form and substance.
Next on the firing line were Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno and Ombudsman Chief Conchita Carpio Morales.
His most recent prosecution sortie was his announcement Thursday evening, Oct. 5, that the “yellow” group (meaning, the opposition Liberal Party) and the “red” sector (the leftleaning groups) allegedly have joined “forces” with the objective of unseating him from the presidency.
Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, LP president, vehemently denied any such agreement.
Because the Leader of the Land is too much engrossed in the prosecution syndrome, I am beginning to believe he likens himself to Elliot Ness, the famed district attorney of Chicago City during the Prohibition Era of the 1930s.
The flamboyant but tough-talking crimefighter almost single-handedly fought crime syndicates – bootleg whisky distribution, protection racket, illegal numbers game, prostitution, influence peddling –not only in the Windy City but in the entire State of Illinois.
On the home front, with those highvalue officials of government on the target deck, lesser personalities who are wrong-doing suspects will have their knees shaking.
This kind of activities those Duterte voters see as a reincarnation of his old job as fiscal and prosecutor in Davao City.
