Taconing defends WBC int'l crown

Jonathan Taconing makes his first defense of the World Boxing Council (WBC) internatio­nal light flyweight championsh­ip against Arnold Garde tonight at the grand ballroom of the Elorde Sports Center in Sucat Road, Paranaque.

Taconing, who stopped Salatiel Amit on Nov. 19, 2016 to win the title, is hoping for a victry that could earn him a crack at the world title from either the WBC or World Boxing Organizati­on (WBO).

The bout headlines a card, put up by internatio­nal promoter Johnny Elorde in cooperatio­n with the Rotary Club of Manila Premier. Bouts start at 6 p.m.

Taconing is currently rated no. 3 in the WBC and no. 2 in the WBO.

Garde is a last-minute replacemen­t for Armand dela Cruz who was was found unfit to box due to a tear in the retina.

At the weigh-in conducted by the Games & Amusements Board (GAB) yesterday at the Elorde Sports Center, Taconing weighed 108 lbs. while Garde was 107.5 lbs.

In the supporting main event, former WBC Internatio­nal Champion Giemel Magramo will face John Mark Apolinario of JC Manangquil stable from Gensan City while comebackin­g former OPBF Champion Vinvin Rufino is pitted against Christian Saga.

Four rounders will have Aljum Pelisio versus Precious Ian Cantero, Christian Victoriano against John Jayvee Antonio , Delmar Pellio versus Jeffrey Labe and MJ Bo versus Robertson Abion.
