‘Reactivate barangay children’s councils’
ILOILO CITY – Barangays in Western Visayas must reactivate councils that protect the rights of children.
The Regional Sub-Committee for the Welfare of Children (RSCWC), a body under the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), found that most barangays in Western Visayas have Local Councils for Protection of Children (LCPCs) that have ceased to function.
RSCWC Secretariat Raji Alvarado said only 86 barangays in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidentals have functional children’s councils.
“Based on our observation, the LCPCs are only functional on paper,” Alvarado said.
He said many barangay officials are not aware there should be children’s councils even though such councils were created 30 years ago.
As the smallest local government unit, the barangays will be aided by the RSCWC in reactivating the councils. (Tara Yap)
