MMDA warning EDSA lane violators

- By ANNA LIZA VILLAS-ALAVAREN

Starting next week, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will strictly enforce rules on the use of the yellow or bus lane as well as the blue motorcycle lane along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA).

“We are appealing to riders, private motorists and bus drivers to stay on their designated lanes,” said Jojo Garcia, MMDA Assistant General Manager for Planning.

By Monday, private motorists who will stray into the yellow lane or bus lane will be apprehended.

The yellow lane, located on first two lanes from the sidewalk, is only designated for public utility vehicles classified as “high-occupancy vehicles.”

The first lane allows buses load and unload passengers in a particular bus stop while the second lane allows buses to move continuously.

“Private vehicles should get out of the yellow lane. Only those turning right to any intersection can drive inside the yellow or bus lanes,” said Garcia.

Private motorists using the yellow lane would be apprehended and be issued with traffic violation ticket with corresponding R500 fine.

Meanwhile, bus drivers who would veer out of the yellow lane will be fined R700.

By Wednesday, motorcycle or scooter riders that will stray from the motorcycle lane shall be penalized with R500 fine.

“Riders can use the fifth lane which is closest to the MRT (Metro Rail Transit) wall,” said Garcia.

The fourth lane from the sidewalk is the designated motorcycle lane or blue lane.

The yellow lane policy was first implemented by then MMDA chairman Bayani Fernando while motorcycle lane was introduced by former MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino.
