Antonio at 2nd place

Grandmaster Joey Antonio came in second place in the Open 50+ while GM Eugene Torre slipped to seventh in the Open 65+ after 11 rounds in the 2017 World Senior Chess Championships in Acqui Terme, Italy over the weekend.

Antonio, 55, settled for runnerup honors after a 51-move victory of a Caro-Khan Opening over IM Spartaco Sarno of Italy in Round 11 to finish with identical 8.5 points with French GM Eric Prie.

But Antonio, who finished with six wins and five draws, prevailed over Prie with a superior quotient during tiebreak.

Peruvian GM Zuniga Julio Granda halved the point with GM Giorgi Bagaturov in the last round to finish with 9.5 points for the crown.

Antonio also placed third in the Blitz 2 division with 7 points after nine rounds on seven wins and two losses.

Torre, meanwhile, was in the running for the title going to the last round until the 66-year-old veteran Olympiad drew with GM Anatoly Vaisser of France in 57 moves of a Queen’s Pawn Opening.

Torre tied for second to 10th places with 8 points, but settled for seventh after the tiebreak. He finished with seven wins, two draws and two losses.

Russian GM Evgeny Sveshnikov won the division by half a point after finishing with 8.5 points following a Round 11 triumph over IM Arkady Shevelev of Israel.
