The lament for Jerusalem

AS Jesus drew near Jerusalem, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If this day you only knew what makes for peace – but now it is hidden from your eyes. For the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides. They will smash you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another within you because you did not recognize the time of your visitation. REFLECTION He saw the city and wept over it. Jesus weeps for the beloved city, Jerusalem. Seldom do we find someone weeping for a place. But that is how much Jesus loves Jerusalem and what it stands for. Alas, this city is unmindful of how much God loves her and how blessed she is to have the Son of Man come to her.

We, too, are like Jerusalem: often unmindful of how much God loves us. God knocks at our door many times, but we do not open it, or we do not recognize the God who visits us. Discerning God’s action in our lives is important; paying attention to how God works in our day-to-day life is essential to our relationship with God. Do we examine our lives daily or regularly so as to recognize God’s visitation?
