The reason for the season

- By ALEX M. EDUQUE

IHAVE contemplated this many a dozen times. Or even more, actually. While we all have somewhat of a template cookie-cutter answer for what the real reason for the season is, as well as what we believe the true meaning of Christmas to be, we get reminded of many things we seldom take time to notice, but that we realize we overlook and take for granted the rest of the year when we are back into the routine and regimen of the daily grind. You see, while the celebration of Christmas is undoubtedly born out of the Christian faith, everyone – regardless of faith, practice, or domination – tends to bask in the merriment of the holiday season. Or so, I have noticed. Whether it be in ways as shallow as partaking in outrageous deals that Christmas sales offer, or taking Instagram-worthy photos with a Christmas tree, or some themed set-up in the background, it is safe to say that in one way or another, it is a most wonderful time of the year for all. Everyone loves that Christmas bonus after all!

If only for the uplifted spirits, and the generosity that abounds throughout the season, the holidays definitely bring out the best in most, if not all of us. People are kinder and more empathetic. They are more willing to lend a hand and all of a sudden, even those you don’t expect it from at all become that much more charitable. As someone who works in the nonprofit realm, I am exposed to all sorts of people year-round. In my books, I know who the true-blue genuine givers are – those who choose to give back without expecting anything in return except utmost transparency and results which they are definitely entitled to. I know seasonal givers as well – and while there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all, I have also seen some transform into year-round givers after feeling the fulfillment. That is inspiring. If only Christmas could have that effect on everyone (and year-round at that), and make even those so drawn to material things choose to be a blessing to the greater community instead, than so much more smiles will be seen.

Throughout the year, I make the rounds in the communities I work with. But somehow, during the Christmas season, their spirits are heightened and their eyes glisten with an indescribable happiness. It is the small things they laugh about, and that fill their hearts most – the simple company of those they otherwise would not have the chance to interact with, the fun and games that get them some candy in the end, a meal from a famed fast-food joint they otherwise have to wait for a special occasion to partake in, or simply, leaving the walls of their immediate community for a day of play in a place they would not go to on a normal basis. The small everyday acts that are ingrained so prominently in our routine, or that we tend to not even pay attention to and oftentimes overlook are in fact the ones that draw the biggest smiles on their faces, and leave a lasting impact in their lives – an imprint in their hearts; a memory, they will forever hold dear.

And that is why I simply love the Christmas season. For the joys it brings us, and for reminding us that the simplest sources of happiness in fact yield the greatest satisfaction. The Yuletide season is not only a reminder to all of us to count our blessings, but to also share them. And while it can get quite stressful as we get roped in amidst the frenzy and pandemonium of the merrymaking, at the end of the day, we must all remind ourselves of the true reason for the season – whatever that may be for you. For truly, there is nothing quite as joyous and celebratory as the holidays!
