LTO eyes demerit scheme for drivers in road rage incidents
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is eyeing the implementation of a point demerit scheme in 2018 in the wake of recent road rage incidents.
Director Francis Almora of the LTO law enforcement service explained that drivers involved in road rage altercations will receive a 10-point demerit that may result to shorter license validity or in the worst case suspension.
The LTO will now include “psychological” aspects in the examination of driver’s license applicants.
Almora reminded the public that having a driver’s license is merely a privilege and not a right that may be revoked by the government incase excessive abuse are committed by the concerned parties.
Last Sunday, a woman was caught on video slapping a taxi driver in the middle of the road.
The following day two burly drivers were also caught on video in a mauling incident in full public view following a traffic altercation.
Almora urged the public to plan their trips ahead and avoid if possible traffic prone areas as traffic congestion is expected to worsen this Holiday Season.
Instead of retaliating, victims of road rage incidents may air their grievances through LTFRB hotline 1342.
Almora pleaded to the drivers to exercise caution and extreme calmness when behind the wheels yo avoid any untoward incidents.
