Tanauan City addressing garbage disposal issues

- By LYKA MANALO

TANAUAN CITY, Batangas – Garbage collection and disposal here hit a snag when the city’s garbage trucks were barred in a Calamba City, Laguna dumpsite.

Mayor Antonio Halili said the city’s garbage haulers were barred in Calamba City since December 16.

To temporarily arrest a looming garbage crisis, the city government is disposing collected wastes in an open lot area in Barangay Natatas.

Halili said that 45 tons of garbage are collected daily from six barangays downtown.

Halili also appealed to residents to cooperate and minimize the volume of garbage.

“We are trying our best to cope with the problem, so I made an appeal (residents) na tumulong naman sila para hindi naman bumaho, malaking problema po talaga ito.” he said.

“Kung meron silang bakanteng lote na pwedeng hukayin, dun muna sila magtapon ng kanilang basura (If they have vacant lots, they can start excavating and temporarily dispose garbage there.” ) Halili added.

He also warned the public against disposing garbage in public areas or they will be heavily fined and sanctioned.

Meanwhile, the city government has alloted P70 million for the construction of a sanitary landfill next year.

Halili said the local government will acquire by next year a 10 – hectare lot in Barangays Bilog-Bilog and Maugat for the project.

Halili said the landfill will be operational within 6 months of construction.

“Nakaplano naman po talaga yan, kaya lang hindi namin iniexpect na biglaan ang pagban sa amin sa dumpsite” he explained.
