‘Greyhound’ in Cebu jail yields shabu, weapons, phones, gadgets
CEBU CITY – Illegal drugs, improvised weapons, mobile phones, and electronic gadgets were recovered in a raid at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) conducted by a joint team of law enforcers, early Friday morning.
“Operation Greyhound” was conducted by a team composed of operatives from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), the Provincial Public Safety Company and Special Weapons and Tactics operatives at the jail facility in Barangay Kalunasa, this city.
CPDRC Acting Warden Bobby Legaspi led the operation on his second day as Acting Jail Warden of the facility. He immediately implemented the greyhound operation to warn inmates who transact illegal business inside the jail.
The team raided 119 cells that included the isolation cell, conjugal rooms and the cells where detainees with drug cases are housed.
The team found 26 small packs of suspected shabu, cigarettes, improvised weapons, mobile phones, and gadgets. One of the mobile phones was recovered in the cell of a certain “Barok,” said to be the number one drug personality in Cebu.
Also discovered were more than 100 pieces of lighters, other drug paraphernalia, and cash.
The packs of cigarettes, owned by the cooperative of the detainees, were also confiscated because of Gov. Hilario Davide’s instructions to ban smoking inside the jail premises.
The administrative office was also included in the search, but the team did not find any contraband items. The team found a safety vault from the canteen with P257,000 cash which, according to the detainees, is owned by its cooperative.
PDEA7 spokesperson Leia Albiar said it is possible that someone inside the jail helps the inmates smuggle illegal contraband especially drugs.
She said they also took the sim cards of the confiscated phones to check if it can lead to more information to lead to supplier of the recovered drugs.
