Any plot to oust Duterte will backfire – Roque

- By GENALYN D. KABILING

Any opposition plot to overthrow President Duterte may backfire and trigger a people power against the instigators, Malacañang warned yesterday.

Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque reminded the opposition bloc that the President continues to enjoy the support of the people, and that they should be careful not to draw public wrath.

“Ang alam ko lang hindi sila makaantay ng 2022, kaya gumagawa silang hakbang para mapabilis. Pero ang maisasagot ko diyan, gawin nila lahat ng gawin nila (What I know

is they cannot wait for 2022 so they are taking steps to hasten it. But I said, they could do everything they want),” Roque said during a Palace news conference.

“Ang Presidente, as the surveys show, has unprecedented approval rating from the people. So mag-ingat sila. Habang pinipilit nilang tanggalin sa posisyon ang Presidente, magagalit sa kanila ang taumbayan, baka ang people power laban sa kanila, hindi laban kay Presidente (The President, as surveys show, has unprecedented approval rating from the people. They should be careful. While they are trying to oust the President from office, the public will get angry with them. People power might be launched against them, not the President),” he added.

Roque made the remarks after Senator Antonio Trillanes IV filed a resolution seeking a Senate probe into the possible violation of the country’s anti-money laundering law by the President and his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio. Trillanes mentioned the Vera Files report that claimed Duterte and his daughter have P100 million in bank deposits and investments but failed to disclose them in their Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth.

Roque dismissed the allegations made by Trillanes against the President as rehashed and old news

“Lumang tugtugin, lumang balita para nang sirang plaka [Old tune, old news, just like a broken record],” he said about Trillanes’s charges against Duterte.

Asked if the Executive Branch will cooperate with the Senate probe, Roque assured the President was not hiding anything but he challenged Trillanes to show his proof.
