Saving rivers requires infrastructure, proper waste disposal – Alvarado

- By FREDDIE C. VELEZ

CALUMPIT, Bulacan — While the construction of the river wall protection in this town is underway, Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado underscored the need for proper waste disposal in order to fully rehabilitate Bulacan’s river system.

“Proper waste disposal is needed to prevent further harm that would apparently create disturbance and wrought havoc to the community,” Alvarado said as he enjoined residents to be responsible caretakers of rivers.

The governor urged Bulakeños not to contribute to the destruction of the environment and join the provincial government in solving the problem of the heavily-silted water systems in the province to ensure public safety and economic progress.

The Bulacan governor said that until today, it has been reported in national newspapers, radios and televisions that improper waste disposal was noted as the main reason why clogging of canals and silting of rivers happen.

A big percentage of the river and irrigation systems in Metro Manila and many provinces in other part of the Philippines have been silted for the past decades thus distributing to flooding during rainy seasons.

“I cannot solve this problem alone. Let’s set politics aside and unite in providing a better life for future generations,” Alvarado said in reminding residents of their role in making the river rehabilitation program of the province successful.

He cited the rivers of Meycauayan, Marilao and Obando, which had been classified by the universal environmentalist group Greenpeace in 2007 as among the dirtiest rivers in the world.
