ORMOC CITY — The city is encouraging the youth to go into sports as a way to avoid vices or illegal drugs.

Mayor Richard Gomez said his Ormoc is developing a comprehensive sport program for the youth.

Gomez, an actor-sportsman turned politician, said a comprehensive sport program will help the youth “become physically fit and develop a healthy lifestyle.”

As part of the sports development drive, the city hosted last March 3 the first PH Global laser-run competition that attracted more than 300 participants.

The competition was held in cooperation with the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderme (UIPM).

The “Ormoc City Laser Run 2018” was the first of its kind to be held in the Philippines, Gomez said.

It involved laser-shooting and a race covering 1,600 meters. The events are part of a pentathlon which also involves swimming, fencing and horse riding, Gomez explained.

Gomez said the laser run is also part of Ormoc’s sport tourism program.
