4 drown in Bicol on Holy Week

CAMP OLA, Legazpi City – Four persons drowned in four separate incidents during Holy Week in Bicol. Senior Inspector Malu Calubaquib, Police Regional Office spokespers­on, said the first drowning incident was recorded March 26 at around 3:40 p.m. at Twin Rock Beach Resort, in Barangay Igang, Virac town, Catanduane­s province.

The victim was identified as Jayhard Dela Rosa y San Juan, 17, and a resident of Pandan town, Catanduane­s.

On March 29, Oscar Vargas Jr. y Sato, 25, a resident of Zone 4, Barangay Lupi, San Fernando town, Catanduane­s drowned at a beach resort in Barangay Caloco, Tinambac town Camarines Sur.

On Easter Sunday, Samuel Garcia y Gallora, 27, and a resident of Barangay Manga, Sipocot, Camarines Sur drowned at a beach resort in the village.

Garcia and his family were having an excursion at the resort. Police said he drowned when he swam out to sea.

Calubaquib said that after the victim’s brother failed to revive him he was taken to Bicol Sanitarium Hospital in Cabusao, Camarines Sur where he was declared dead.

“The victim had a stainless implant in his leg and believed to have suffered a leg spasm,” Calubaquib said.

Also on Easter Sunday, Ashley Atanacio y Beatriz, 12, a resident of Barangay Tacbong, Pili, Camarines Sur, drowned at Tikling Island Beach in Barangay Calintaan, Matnog, Sorsogon.

Calubaquib said Atanacio and her friend, Janine Kate Maclang were swimming when a big wave swept them far from the beach.

Maclang survived but Atanacio died at Matnog Medicare Hospital.
