Albayalde to fill in ‘big shoes’ in PNP

- By MARTIN A. SADONGDONG

Reforms and programs at the Philippine National Police (PNP) will continue to be implemented under the strict guidance of outgoing National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Oscar Albayalde once he assumes office as the country’s next top cop.

In a video phone interview with reporters, Albayalde thanked President Duterte for his trust and faith in him, as he promised to continue the PNP’s major programs including the war on drugs and internal cleansing among others.

“Continuity is what’s really important and we will see to it that what has been started now will be continued even after my service to the PNP,” said Albayalde, who was expected to meet outgoing chief PNP Director General Ronald dela Rosa in Iloilo yesterday.

Likewise, in official statement sent to reporters Thursday night, Albayalde vowed that he will do his “very best to fill the big shoes that will be left by Director General Ronald dela Rosa.”

“I will do my very best to fill the big shoes that will be left by Director General Ronald dela Rosa. Under my watch, the PNP will work side by side with you to help fulfill your promise of genuine change for the Filipino people, and of a more disciplined and better police force,” Albayalde stated.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) officer-in-charge (OIC) Eduardo M. Año said Albayalde is very qualified to head the PNP and that the President was right on target when he chose the next PNP Chief based on an excellent track record and professionalism.

“He (Albayalde) is a professional and capable police officer who can steer and lead the Team PNP in its multifarious missions. He has also my trust and confidence,” Año said, citing how Albayalde successfully led the 20,000-strong NCRPO during the 31st ASEAN Summit in Manila last year.

Senator Sherwin T. Gatchalian also wished Albayalde well. “General Albayalde has built a strong reputation as a firm, nononsense leader and disciplinarian during his service as regional director of the PNP National Capital Region (NCR),” he said.
