Weapons, cellphones seized in Cebu City Jail

- By CALVIN D. CORDOVA

CEBU CITY — Packs of cigarettes, cellphones and improvised bladed weapons were seized from the Cebu City Jail in an early morning greyhound operation yesterday.

Superintendent Renante Rubio, Cebu City Jail warden, said it was a good sign that no illegal drugs were seized during the operation.

“We were able to discover their methods of sneaking in illegal drugs into the facility that’s why we didn’t find any illegal drugs today,” said Rubio.

But Rubio said some inmates have discovered a new modus in bringing contraband, such as cigarettes, into the facility.

“The new modus is called fishing. Packs of cigarettes are tied together with a rope. The contact then throws the rope over the fence and it will be pulled by an inmate inside,” said Rubio.

“Before, they used minors to bring in contrabands. There was also an old modus called “bombing” where contrabands are thrown over the facility’s fence but we were able to address that by increasing the height of the fence and installing canopies. But now they are using ropes to sneak in contrabands,” said Rubio.

Rubio said that apart from shabu, cigarettes are also in demand inside the facility.

“It is being sold at P100 per stick or even at P150 per stick if the supply is low. That’s why some inmates are really looking for ways to get cigarettes from their contacts outside,” added Rubio.

Rubio said there are jailguards detailed along the perimeter fence but not on a 24-hour basis.

“These inmates strike when jailguards are not around. But we will try to install more cyclone wirer and canopies so that the new modus called fishing will be stopped,” said Rubio.

Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, who was present during the operation, said the bladed weapons like nails might have come from construction workers.
