Siquijor frat wages war vs hunger
A post in social media about Duterte’s Kitchen started the involvement of a fraternity in Siquijor in feeding the poor.
John Israel Padayhag, head of the Alpha Kappa Rho (AKRHO) Siquijor Chapter Fraternity, chanced upon a post about the launching of Duterte’s Kitchen in Dumaguete. He immediately contacted the kitchen. He was referred to the main office (then in Cubao, Quezon City) where guidelines and a manual for the program are available.
Padayhag, an employee at the Siquijor provincial government, gathered 50 fraternity members and 15 volunteers and launched Duterte’s Kitchen in Siquijor last September.
Keeping the Siquijor Kitchen going are donations from OFWs and other members of the private sector – food, gift certificates, food supplements and vitamins. With that, the fraternity holds feeding programs in remote areas of Siquijor eight to 10 times a month.
They have also worked out a system with volunteers cooking the rice meals and fraternity members distributing them in the mountain barangays.
The experience has inspired Padayhag and his friends to plan to continue to feed the poor even after Duterte’s term. As long as there are people willing to help, we will continue feeding the poor, they said.
