***** EWS INNOVATION OLYMPICS CHAMP – A team of three Asian Institute Of Management (AIM) students was adjudged champion in the Innovation Olympics conducted by East-West Seed Company. The members of the team are Aiah Sarmiento, Gorby Dimalanta and Aaron David who came up with an e-magsasaka platform where buyers of agricultural products can find farmers who are producing the crops they need. At the same time, the farmers can also use the database to look for buyers of their produce.
The AIM team bested who bested two other finalists from UP Los Baños received a cash prize of R250,000.
The e-magsasaka platform aims to minimize the number of middlemen involved in the trading of agricultural produce. With the linkage of the farmers and the buyers, the farmers can expect to receive more reasonable prices for their harvest. During the 6-month pilot stage, Team Agriviz worked with farmers’ coopertives, local government units and vegetable buyers.
East-West launched the Innovation Olympics last year to generate R250,000 new ideas that could improve the livelihood of farmers. The company came up with the competition as a highlight of its 35th anniversary. EastWest Seed which was founded in the Philippines in 1982 is now one of the Top 10 vegetable seed companies in the world.
