Customs sets public auction on May 8

The Bureau of Customs aims to gain an additional 17.1-million revenue from a public auction sale of various goods which it will hold in May.

Various seized goods will be auctioned on May 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the Manila Internatio­nal Container Port (MICP) in Tondo, Manila.

According to the Auction and Cargo Disposal Division (ACDD) of MICP, the auction will be conducted through sealed bidding.

Among the shipments up for bidding are six containers consigned to EMT Trading with a total floor price of 15.1 million.

The shipments have undergone K9 inspection upon instructio­n of Customs Chief Isidro Lapena to strictly examine all shipments of EMT Trading which have been sitting at the MICP.

EMT Trading was involved in the importatio­n of hundreds of illegal drugs in 2017. It is now facing smuggling charges and has been stripped off its importer’s accreditat­ion.

Among the products that will be included in the auction are 100 packages of cellphone accessorie­s, ladies bag, universal charger, office cabinet, office chair, and kegerator; shirts and drums of yellow dye; 663 packages of cooling mat, shoe rack, slipshort, leggings, working gloves, reflective vest, pvc pipe, horn, pencil case, and caps valued at 11 million; 765 packages of rolled fabrics, ladies underwear, and gloves; a container of adjustable wrench, air hose, angle grinder, angle polisher, aspirator blower, ball point, hix key, base board and head board, battery charger and starter, claw hammer, booster cable, chain block, masonry drill bits, cut off saw; and a container of scrub, brush and knockdown plastic broom.

The public auction will also cover four sale lots of various goods including two 40-footer containers of kitchenwar­e, plastic cup, plastic bag, plastic brush, plastic artificial flower, ladies casual synthetic shoes, men’s casual synthetic shoes, T-shirts, pens, hook hinges with a floor price of 12 million.

Other goods to be auctioned include two pallets food flavoring with a floor price of 161,200 and 67 boxes of duralock t-head square hole pegged at 133,500.

According to the bureau the upcoming auction is pursuant to the provisions of Section 1139 to 1150 of the Republic Act No. 10863 otherwise known as the Customs Modernizat­ion and Tariff Act (CMTA) of 2016 and other relevant Customs Memorandum Orders, Customs Administra­tive Orders.

Meanwhile, the bureau announced that public viewing of merchandis­e and pre-bid conference for all qualified bidders will be held on May 3 and 4 at the MICP.

A tricycle driver who was posing as a police officer, wearing a uniform he later said he purchased in Camp Crame, was arrested at a checkpoint along NAIA Road, Pasay City Wednesday night.

Police identified the man as Felix Varona, 41, a resident of Ugbo St., Tondo, Manila. The suspect was clad in police uniform and had a knife tucked to his waist.

Investigat­ion showed that the man was flagged down at around 9 p.m. at a checkpoint at NAIA road corner Chapel road Barangay 194 in Pasay City.

Law enforcers from the Police Community Precinct (PCP)-9 of the Pasay City Police were conducting a checkpoint when they spotted Varona driving a motorcycle without a helmet.

The suspect who was wearing police uniform even presented an identifica­tion card to the police. When verified, it turned out to be fake. A knife was also recovered from his possession.

Varona was brought to the Station Investigat­ion and Detective Management Branch (SIDMB) of the Pasay City Police where he will be facing charges of usurpation of authority, illegal use of uniform and insignia, and possession of deadly weapon.

According to the arrested suspect, he always wanted to be a policeman. He said that he purchased the uniform from Camp Crame including the badges. As for the knife, he said he needed it in case of emergency.
