ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) in this city was able to collect over P58-million in customs duties and taxes last month, registering 142 percent over the target goal collection pegged by BOC central office Manila. BOC District 11 Collector Atty Lyceo M Martinez said his office was able to collect P58,129,348 in importation duties and taxes last month, which was way above the target collection of P24 million for May.

“This is the second month we exceeded the target goal collection given to us by BOC central office Manila,” Martinez said. According to him, among the factors that contributed to the increase in collection was the continuous dialogue with the local traders and importers.

“Explaining to them the importance in the payment of duties and taxes to the government for them to understand why they have to pay the corresponding taxes to the government,” Martinez added.

The BOC in this city also sold through public auction 1,920 tons of Vietnam rice or about 39,000 bags of rice containing 50 kilos of rice per sack last month and earned P36,386 Million which represented 70 percent of the total amount earned by the BOC.

BOC seized the illegal rice shipment from a foreign cargo vessel M/V J-Phia, off the coast of Ulotanga in Sibugay province in January this year.

The vessel was about to unload the smuggled rice in Ulotanga, when elements of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) apprehended the vessel and seized its cargo.
