LPAs to bring rains this week – PAGASA

- By ELLALYN DE VERA-RUIZ

The two low pressure areas (LPAs) being monitored by weather forecasters will continue to bring rains over most of the western and eastern sections of the country during the school opening week.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the LPA west of Palawan has already left the country’s area of responsibility early Saturday, but the LPA east of Surigao del Sur is seen to move closer to the country. Both weather disturbances are embedded inside the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), a weather system that serves as breeding ground for brewing cyclones.

Moderate to occasional heavy rain showers and thunderstorms will prevail over Eastern Mindanao, Western Visayas and Palawan today and tomorrow.

PAGASA warned residents in these areas against possible flash floods and landslides.

Meanwhile, the rest of Visayas and Mindanao will have scattered light to moderate rain showers and thunderstorms at least until Monday.

According to PAGASA weather specialist Ezra Bulquerin, the LPA over the West Philippine Sea may intensify into a tropical depression within 36 hours.

Even if it is already outside the PAR, Bulquerin said the extension of the LPA will bring rains over the western portion of the country, including Metro Manila by Tuesday.

‘Domeng’ Likewise, the LPA over the Pacific Ocean 380 kilometers east of Surigao City in Surigao del Sur, may develop into a tropical depression within the next three days. It will be called “Domeng” once it becomes a cyclone.

Bulquerin said the brewing cyclone east of Mindanao is forecast to move north and may bring rains over Davao, Caraga, and Eastern Visayas regions.

By Tuesday, the outer periphery of the brewing cyclone over the Pacific Ocean will bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas.

PAGASA said the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

By Wednesday until Thursday, Metro Manila, Zambales, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Masbate, Sorsogon, and the whole Visayas will be cloudy with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon or habagat enhanced by the weather disturbance west of the country.

PAGASA said Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolates rain showers or thunderstorms.

By Friday, Northern Luzon will experience rains and occasional gusty winds as the brewing cyclone east of the country may move towards the extreme Northern Luzon or Taiwan.

Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon and Western Visayas will experience occasional rains, while the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
