Traffic cop cited for good deed

- By CHITO A. CHAVEZ

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) commended PO1 George Salvador Viernes Jr. for refusing a tip from a couple he had assisted after their car got stalled on EDSA.

DILG officer-in-charge (OIC) Eduardo M. Año said the act shown by Viernes, assigned at the PNP Traffic Enforcement Unit, Regional Highway Patrol Unit (RHPU) in Metro Manila, is worth emulating as he exemplifies the department’s brand of service of being matino, mahusay, at maaasahan (righteous, exemplary and dependable).

“Ganyan ang pulis! Tapat sa tungkulin at may integridad, at higit sa lahat, hindi naghihintay ng kabayaran para sa paglilingkod sa mga mamamayan. Saludo ako kay PO1 Viernes (Police officers should be like that. Loyal to his task, equipped with integrity and most of all does not expect something in return for performing hiss job. I salute PO1 Viernes),” said Año.

Viernes' pictures went viral on social media sites particularly Facebook (FB) since last week following the post of Carolyn Jayme when Viernes helped her and her husband when their car was stuck on EDSA.

According to the post, Jayme was even more impressed when Viernes declined to accept the tip she offered as a gesture of appreciation for his kindness.

The DILG Chief was pleased that a simple act of good deed by a police officer can be overwhelmingly appreciated by the public.

Año said he believes that there are thousand-and-one Viernezes out there who are honest and efficient in doing their jobs but they are not being highlighted in the media.
