Chief of police killed in Mallig drug bust

The 31-year-old chief of police (COP) of Mallig municipali­ty, Isabela province was shot dead in a drug sting gone bad last Sunday night.

Killed was Senior Inspector Michael Angelo Tubaña, 31, of Vira Poblacion, Roxas, Isabela.

Superinten­dent Ronald Laggui, head of the Provincial Investigat­ion and Detection Management Branch, said Tubaña was gunned down by one of two drug pushers riding a motorcycle on the national highway in Barangay Centro 1, Mallig at 10:15 p.m.

Tubaña, along with Police Officer 3 Edwin Gubal and two confidenti­al agents, were in the middle of a buy-bust operation when, suddenly, one of the suspects pulled out a gun and shot him in the body.

Laggui said Tubaña was immediatel­y rushed to the hospital, but expired along the way.

The two targets of the drug bust eluded arrest and are now the subjects of a police hunt with the Kalinga Police Provincial Office (PPO) joining the dragnet operations. Ex-cop dies in buy-bust Also on Sunday, a dismissed policeman who goes by the alias “Parak” was killed in a running gun battle with police who were supposed to arrest him for drug pushing in Famy, Laguna.

Former cop, Arnel M. Aguilan, was the subject of a buy-bust operation at 9:55 p.m. in Barangay Tunbac, Famy, when he sensed he was being entrapped.

He ran away, drew his gun and fired at the undercover agents. Police gave chase and fired back, critically wounding Aguilan. He was taken to the Pakil General Cailles District Hospital, but declared dead on arrival by the attending physician. (Danny J. Estacio)
