Public warned against floods, landslides in next 2 to 3 days

- By ELLALYN DE VERARUIZ

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned the public against flashfloods and landslides in the next two to three days due to light to moderate to at times heavy rains from thunderstorms in high-risk areas in the entire country.

Sheilla Reyes, PAGASA weather specialist, said the weather bureau does

not expect the formation of tropical cyclone until Tuesday but the southwest monsoon or habagat will continue to affect the western section of the country.

There will be a higher chance of light to moderate rain showers with localized thunderstorms over Ilocos Region today, she said.

The rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, will experience fair weather in the morning but there will be sudden heavy rains and gusty winds due to localized thunderstorms in the late afternoon or early evening, she added.

We advise the public to practice extra caution during the occurrence of a thunderstorm, as it may trigger flashfloods or landslides in low-lying or mountainous areas, Reyes said.

She also urged the public to continue monitoring PAGASA’s Facebook and Twitter accounts for thunderstorm advisories.

Likewise, the entire Visayas and Mindanao will have generally fair weather apart from isolated rain showers and localized thunderstorms.

By Monday until Thursday, PAGASA said the habagat will affect most of the western section of Luzon.

Extreme Northern Luzon and parts of western Luzon will continue to be cloudy with light to occasionally moderate rains with scattered thunderstorms while Bicol Region and Visayas will be cloudy with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon or evening.

By Friday, PAGASA said a low-pressure area will likely develop east of the country and move slowly northeast, while the southwest monsoon will continue to persist over Luzon.

Expect cloudy skies with light to moderate rains to prevail across western Luzon and part of northern Luzon with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.

However, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will prevail over the rest of the country including Metro Manila.
