CEBU CITY – Fifty-two-year-old artist Joseph Aldea from Barangay Junquera, this city, dreams of bringing home the R30,000 cash prize in the 8th Manila Bulletin Sketch Fest.

The drawing contest was held Saturday at SM Seaside Cebu with the theme ‘Bayani Juan’.

It was the first time Aldea joined the competition. He owns a shop where he sold his two artworks–a portrait of Maria Theresa and a painting illustrating the relationship of Mary and Jesus Christ which he titled The Mother and the Child.

“I joined here because I want to create an organization for the young people who have the heart for the arts. I want to share my God-given talent to them and this is for free,” Aldea said.

Just this month, Aldea had his first student, Rica Jean Tapic, 17. Tapic said she was amazed by his artworks.

Tapic also joined the Sketch Fest which was divided into three categories; kiddie, junior and senior.

In the kiddie category, the first placer will get R5,000, the second R3,000 and the third R2,000.

In the junior category, the prizes are R10,000 for first place, R7,000 for second and R5,000 for third.

The second and third runners up will also get R10,000 to R15,000.

Mark Dy, Manila Bulletin Brand and Marketing manager, said the contest is part of the newspaper’s advocacy to introduce the arts and promote creativity in children.

Dy said the Cebu leg is the kick-off of the Sketch Fest 2018 and it is the second year the contest was extended to Cebu and Davao.

The competition will move to Davao on July 28 and then to Manila on August 27.
