At 50 years old, actor-turned-politician Herbert Bautista can look back on his life so far and smile.

At 50 years old, actor-turnedpolitician Herbert Bautista can look back on his life so far and smile. One person who gets credit for this grin is Kris Aquino with whom he supposedly had a thing years ago and some speculate, even now.

Whatever it is, Herbert wants to thank Kris for being part of his life.

“Because in that short and very brief moment in our lives, in that period, I’d like to thank her for guiding me,” he explained in Filipino. “I’d like to thank her because she became part of my journey towards finding the right path and I hope that one way or another, I also became part of her development as a person.”

He said he is really proud of Kris because she is able to stand up on her own feet despite many challenges that have come her way.

“And with all of her endorsements – I think 50 plus and counting – I think that’s the blessing she has received,” he said. “So I wish her the best in her career and I know she’s going to stay in the industry for a long time.”

He added in jest:“Keep it up! Be good and avoid fights. It’s nice to have many friends.”

He explained that if ever there was any relationship between them, it was more of a “mutual respect between two individuals.”

“It’s less than heavier relationship but more than being friends,” was how he put it.

He also shared the actress-host helped expand his outlook

“She gave many options in life. She was the one who made me realize ‘Why not? This could be possible,”’ he said.

In fact, Herbert followed the advice of Kris about forming a social media team to make videos and share it on different platforms.

“She told me to come up with a documentary on what I did in Quezon City,” he said.

Family man

When his term as Mayor of Quezon City ends, Herbert said that the plan as of this writing is to spend more time on guiding his four kids.

He mulls that after serving Quezon City for 33 years now, it may be time to focus more on being a father.

“I mean now that they are adults, I think it will be easier for us to communicate to each other because they would understand things better.”

Herbert expressed gratitude to the mothers of his children for rearing them in the best way possible.

“My children have fear of God, they respect the elderly, those who in authority. They don’t abuse the position we have, unlike the other kids who say ‘I’m the son of Mayor.’ So I’m very thankful to their mothers” he related.

Herbert said that his son Race, a film student in New York, is set to graduate this September.

“He already finished his script writing, acting and directing subjects. Right now, he’s busy doing his film thesis,” he shared.

According to him, his son wants to come home to the Philippines to apprentice under local directors.

Meanwhile, Cray, his other son with producer Eloisa Matias, is a guitar student at the UP College of Music.

As for Athena, his daughter with radio host Tates Gana, she graduated recently with a degree in Political Science at Ateneo de Manila University. His daughter wants to become a lawyer but he advised her to stop for a year and think about her plans more carefully. Herbert’s youngest child, Harvey, who has tried his luck in show business, also opened up to his father that he wants to become a director. “But I told him to finished high school first. He still has four years to think about what he really wants in the future,” the mayor said.

Story of his life

Herbert has launched the biography “Bistek @ 50: Life In Full Color.” It’s divided into three chapters – about his personal life, showbiz career, and government service stories “and there are highlight stories in between.” In the book, he also shared the lessons he learned in life, as well as his plans when his term as mayor ends. “So the concept is that I’m turning 50 and me serving people for 33 years. I think it’s just appropriate to come up with a book to document the milestones of my life.”
