CEBU CITY – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Central Visayas is now accepting applications for its Science and Technology Undergraduate Scholarships for 2019.

“We are now accepting scholarships applications for 2019 under RA-7687 and merit scholarship program under RA-2067 and application forms are now available at any DOST-7 field offices in the region, says DOST Regional Director Edilberto Paradela.

Paradela said Republic Act 7687 or the “Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994” provides for scholarships to talented and deserving students whose families’ socio-economic status does not exceed the set cut-off values of certain indicators.

Those who qualify for the scholarship must go into priority fields of study in the basic sciences, engineering, other applied sciences, and science and mathematics teaching, Paradela said.

The DOST Science Education Institute (SEI) Merit Scholarship Program under Republic Act 2067 is awarded to students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and are willing to pursue careers in science and technology.

Elvirg Salana, DOST regional Senior Research Specialist II and program in-charge, said the deadline for filing applications is August 31, and the qualifying examination is on October 21 in 21 identified schools/ testing centers in the region.

Salana told Manila Bulletin that Central Visayas has 1,121 sci-tech scholars as of the end of the second semester of 2017-2018, and 779 have qualified to start in August.

DOST scholars receive tuition and other fees equivalent to P40,000 per academic year; a book allowance of P10,000 per year; monthly living allowance of P7,000 and other financial privileges, Salana said.

The scholars are enrolled in state universities and colleges, CHEDidentified Centers of Excellence (COE) or Centers of Development (COD) for the S&T programs covered under the DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarships and in institutions with FAAP Level III accreditation.

Those who complete the scholarship program are required to render service in the country on a full-time basis, preferably in his/her home region for a minimum period equivalent to the length of time he or/she enjoyed the scholarship, Salana said. (Minerva BC Newman)
