53rd Year of Independence of Singapore
THE Republic of Singapore celebrates today the 53rd anniversary of its independence, as it leads the celebration of the 51st founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Singapore is a highly urbanized city-state in the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula in Southeast Asia. It gained its independence from Malaysia on August 9, 1965. Independence Day traditionally features a National Day Parade at The Float @ Marina Bay, an address by the Prime Minister, military parades, multicultural performances, and fireworks. The national flag is prominently displayed throughout the country.
The NDP 2018 theme is “We Are Singapore.” It highlights a pledge of unity and togetherness among their diverse cultures, “We” in this year’s theme emphasizes the collective, where, regardless of their origins and wherever they are, Singapore is their way of life and will always be their home. The theme defines the Singapore Spirit, invoking the strength and resilience which built Singapore and empowers Singaporeans to overcome future challenges and adversities together. It reminds them that they will collectively shape and be responsible for Singapore’s future.
The Philippines and Singapore established full diplomatic relations on May 16, 1969, when the Philippine consulate-general in Singapore was raised to embassy level. Singapore has an embassy in Taguig City, Metro Manila. The two counties are founding fathers of the ASEAN. They have economic cooperation and have agreed to boost tourism and security.
During President Rodrigo Duterte’s visit to Singapore for the 32nd ASEAN Summit in April this year, the Philippines brought home a total of US$185.7 million worth of investments. Six memoranda of understanding and four letters of intent were signed between the two countries during Duterte’s meeting with the Singaporean business delegation.
The agreements are expected to generate around 1,920 jobs.
