San Beda displayed championship poise in the final quarter as it turned back San Sebastian, 65-54, yesterday to stay unbeaten in NCAA men’s basketball at The Arena in San Juan City.

Javee Mocon and Fil-Canadian James Canlas drained 10 points each in the fourth quarter for the defending champions, who boosted their winloss tally to 6-0 and inched closer to league-leader Lyceum Pirates (7-0).

The defeat was an added blow to the Stags following the forfeiture of their games against Jose Rizal University and College of St. Benilde where RK Ilagan saw action.

The sanction came at the heels of Ilagan competing in a different league, which is prohibited by the league.

With the forfeiture, JRU and CSB improved to 1-6 and 4-3.

“It’s a tough win for us. We only made 14 assists, but at least we tried to rotate the ball, look for the open man and luckily in the fourth quarter, we made out shots,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez.

University of Perpetual Help, meantim, turned back Mapua’s late rally for a 74-68 triumph.

With their lead cut to 66-64, after a 9-0 blast from the Cardinals, Kim Aurin scored back-to-back baskets for the Altas to break away for their fifth victory in eight games.
