What does a parent do when her only child and daughter is bullied at school? Pull her out of school and homeschool her, of course!
Today, Camille Paguio tells us the reason she believes homeschooling works and how it has helped her become who she is now, a successful entrepreneur and a happy wife to Floyd and mother to their lively young son, Cedie.
Cams, as she is fondly called, experienced bullying in high school when she transferred to a co-ed school from an all-girls school. Without her knowing, her classmates put a sign on her back which made her other classmates run after her around the school. The experience was so traumatizing to her that she and her mom decided that the next best recourse was for Camille to study at home. At that time, they were already familiar with it because most of Camille’s cousins were already homeschooling.
DEVELOPING DISCIPLINE AND TIME MANAGEMENT
Camille enrolled at Thompson High School, now Penn Foster High School, an online school that offered distance learning to high school students. Since she was already in second year high school or Grade 8, she studied independently and made sure she was ready for the exams she took at the Thompson High office with an exam proctor. From this experience, Camille says that she learned time management and discipline. Even if she was studying by herself, she was able to manage her time daily and discipline herself to finish her requirements and be ready for her exams.
Camille’s mother puts it best when she said “a classroom is nothing but a pond compared to the ocean” and through homeschooling, Camille’s world opened up to an ocean of possibilities.
SOCIETY, FAMILY, BUSINESS
While studying high school at home, her mother started training her in their family’s logistics business. To Camille, the beauty of homeschooling was that even while she was studying, she was already learning the ins and outs of their business, Kalliyan Trucking Services, Inc., the official subconwas tractor of Air21. While her peers were still studying theories, she was already applying them at work. Her early training has paid off because she now leads their company as the VP for Marketing and Finance.
Because her time was very flexible, there was no lack of socialization opportunities. Cams joined extra-curricular activities, religious organizations, and socio-civic organizations. Being the niece of former senator and governor of Laguna, Joey Lina, Cams was aware of her social responsibility early in life. She now leads the Rotary Club of Alabang Lampara as its president.
What she considers the best blessing of all was that through homeschooling, she was able to fully participate in the care of her mother, who was diagnosed with cancer. Through the years of chemotherapy and treatments, Cams there for her mother who is now a proud cancer survivor.
HOMESHOOLING WORKS EVEN IN COLLEGE
Camille’s high school homeschool experience was so positive and effective, she even pursued her college education through online distance learning. Camille earned her Bachelor’s Degree in International Marketing from Penn State University under the open school program.
Knowing that homeschooling has worked well for her and her cousins, Cams now plans to homeschool her son, too.
