Diva in the details

As ‘The Clash’ final showdown draws near, Lani Misalucha pricks up her ears to errors.

No one knows what could happen as they sing.

Though it is not the first time Lani Misalucha has served as judge on a TV singing contest, she admitted it’s getting harder for her now on “The Clash” as they are down to the last few weeks. In an interview, Bulletin Entertainment learned that the diva would have recalibrated her personal criteria at this point. That is, instead of just looking for singer with the best voice since all of them are good, she will be ever alert for contestants’ errors from hereon.

Without identifying who it is, she recalled one contestant who “slipped.”

“He sang flawlessly in the beginning and he’s very appealing when he performed,” she said right after her mall show at SM City Davao in time for the Kadayawan Festival organized by GMA Regional TV. “Unfortunately, for some reason in the second round, he messed up. It was really unexpected and we, the judges, were dumbfounded. Nobody expected that.”

This is the reason it’s hard to predict who will win if the only basis used is vocal quality and skills. “No one knows what could happen as they sing,” she pointed out. Of course, it helps if they always sing from the heart “as the sentiment (of the song) will resonate with the listeners.” Contestants would also do well to choose a song that suits them according to their age, personality, looks and not just if they could reach the notes. Asked if she and her co-judges – Christian Bautista, and Ai Ai delas Alas – also clash in opinion, Lani admitted they do.

“Each of us see things differently, uniquely,” she explained. “You can compare it to appreciating art in that one sees a painting in a certain way but another person might give it another interpretation.”

“The Clash” grand winner will have an exclusive management contract with GMA Network, and will take home one million pesos cash, a brand new car, and a house and lot.

Hosted by Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, the show airs Saturday and Sundays.
