Filipinos test skills against foreign bets
With crossfit gaining adherents in the country, organizers of the Assault Fitness RX Smart Gear Kalis Games are hoping that the three-day event that started Friday at the Crossroad Center Convenarium in Quezon City will raise the bar of competition among Filipinos.
Sunny Conde, director of the 2018 Kalis Games, said she hopes the event will fire up the Filipinos’ soul and passion for the emerging sport.
“These workouts are designed by Sean Philips, a cross fit coach from Miami. He is a Filipino but he is American born. He is one of the seminar staff of cross fit headquarters and has designed heavy workouts that are challenging for athletes,” said Conde who has served as judge in various competitions around the globe.
Conde said Filipinos have still a long way to go to compete with American, Australian and European athletes but can get better through competitions.
By bridging the gap, Conde said she hopes that these challenging workouts can bring out the best on local participants and hopefully help them get on the right track and be eventually at par with rest of the world.
One of the top local athletes tipped to keep in step with the international competition is 29-year-old Kristen Lim. She has been into the sport for five years now and joins annual competitions to gauge her previous performances.
“It’s a yearly thing for me to join competitions to check out if I have improved the previous years. It is also fulfilling since the community gets together and do what we all love to do,” said Lim.
