Villars continue Christmas Village treat tradition for kids
Pine trees, storybook-style houses, gifts galore, and Santa Claus himself.
Dozens of children from lessfortunate families residing in Baseco, Tondo immersed themselves in these images last December 9 in what could be described as a "genuine Christmas experience" courtesy of Senator Cynthia Villar and her SIPAG (Social Institute for Poverty Alleviation and Governance) Foundation.
"Every year, we hold a gift-giving so that the children in Manila get the chance to see a Christmas house and stroll here," Senator Villar told reporters at the Christmas Village in Crosswinds, Barangay Iruhin, Tagaytay.
The Baseco children, who were joined by kids from the local barangay, totaled 150.
The youngsters–who wore huge smiles along with their Sunday best– were accompanied by their parents at the scenic 100-hectare Crosswinds community.
"This is a tradition for the Villar family and we're happy to be able to continue it," said Senator Villar, who chairs the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food.
The family tradition is nine years running.
Speaking of family, the lady senator was assisted by her loved ones during the gift-giving event that saw each child take home presents and giveaways.
Joining the activity were Senator Villar's husband, former Senate President Manny Villar, her son, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar, her daughter-in-law, Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Emmeline Aglipay Villar and her daughter Vista Land Director Camille Villar.
Her two grandchildren, Emma Therese and Tristan, were also present.
"These are the siblings of the children who sang Senator [Manny] Villar's song for free when he ran for president," Senator Villar said, pointing to the Baseco children.
And let's not forget Santa Claus, who probably appeared larger-than-life to the young guests aged between two and 13 years old.
"It's very important to make children enjoy Christmas. This is the only time that's truly for them. They look forward to it because there are a lot of gifts, a lot of games. There's Santa Claus, there's happiness," she said as he highlighted the significance of Christmas to kids.
While the gifts and goodies received by the children will only go so far, Senator Villar said it's the happy memories of Christmas celebrations that will remain with them in the years to come.
"When they grow up, these are the memories that will stick with them. They can say that they had a happy childhood because they experienced these traditions," she said.
Before the actual gift-giving, the kids were treated to a program full of contests and prizes. A magic and ventriloquist show as well as a face painting activity were also held.
Senator Villar said a similar activity will be done for the children of Orani, Bataan.
Former Senate President Villar's mother hails from that area.
A gift-giving event will also take place in Bacoor, Cavite at the Villar SIPAG Farm School.
